WIKI The full breakdown — not the billboard

Your gaming questions, answered live.

Updog is an AI voice companion that sits on your screen as a floating overlay. Ask it anything mid-game — it answers out loud, remembers context across sessions, and looks up answers in a built-in game knowledge base so it's fast and accurate.

Features — deep dive

Everything it can do, explained

Not bullet points. Actual explanations of how each feature works and why it matters.

Voice in / voice out

Ask anything without leaving the game

Updog listens for your voice the moment you activate it. You ask, it answers — out loud, through your speakers or headset, while you keep your eyes on the screen. No typing. No alt-tabbing. No wiki rabbit holes.

It uses high-quality speech recognition to catch what you said even when there's game audio in the background, and speaks back with a real, non-robotic voice you can customize. The entire exchange takes a few seconds.

"What does this ring do?" — Updog answers before you even look back at the item.

EXAMPLE EXCHANGE

You're in Volcano Manor. The Magma Wyrm is ahead — fire resistance would help here.
"What does the Dragoncrest Shield Talisman do?"
Reduces physical damage taken. Great if you don't have fire resistance gear yet — it stacks well with your armor right now.
"And where do I find it?"
It's in Stormveil Castle — the room just before Godrick. Might be worth the detour.
Persistent memory

Remembers what you forgot

Updog keeps two kinds of memory. Session memory tracks the whole conversation while you're playing — every question, every answer, so you can say "the sword you mentioned earlier" and it knows what you mean.

Persistent memory survives across sessions. Your goals, the things you said out loud that mattered, and context it picked up through the conversation get saved and reloaded the next time you boot up. So when you come back after two days, it remembers: you were heading to the capital to buy the armor set.

You can inspect and edit your memories from the settings panel any time.

No more "wait, what was I doing?" — Updog is the part of your brain that keeps track.

MEMORY INSPECTOR

GOAL Save enough gold to buy the Lionel's Set from Enia in Roundtable Hold
FACT Player is using a Dex/Arc build with the Rivers of Blood katana
LOG Last session: cleared Windmill Village, heading toward Altus Plateau
FACT Player prefers not to get spoilers about main story endings
GOAL Find and buy the Mimic Tear Ashes — "heard it's the best summon"
Game detection

Knows what you're playing the second you launch it

Updog watches your running processes and detects when a supported game is active. The moment it spots your game, it locks context — all answers become scoped to that game, the Codex loads the right data, and it stops answering questions about anything else until you switch.

You don't configure anything. You just launch the game and Updog follows. If you're playing two games in the same session (it happens), it tracks whichever window has focus.

You'll never get an Elden Ring answer when you're actually asking about Warframe.

Screen awareness

Sees what you see — only when you say so

Screen awareness lets Updog read your screen in real time using computer vision. When it's on, Updog can react to what's actually happening: your current health, what item you're hovering over, the skill tooltip you can't parse, the map location you're in.

This feature is off by default. When it's running, a clear indicator appears so you always know. You can turn it on or off at any point mid-session. Nothing is uploaded anywhere — the analysis runs on demand and isn't stored.

Point it at that cryptic tooltip and ask "what does this actually mean?" — no typing required.

Quest helper

A nudge, not a walkthrough dump

Updog's quest helper tracks what you're working toward and gives hints on demand — not spoilers. Steps are blurred by default. You reveal one at a time if you're stuck, or ask for the whole path if you'd rather just get through it.

Story companion mode adds a layer on top: Updog will foreshadow what's coming thematically without revealing it outright, keeping the narrative intact. Achievement hunter mode flags missables before you accidentally lock them out.

"Just give me a nudge" is a valid input. It understands what you mean.

ACTIVE QUEST

⚔️ Find the Two Fingers — Elden Ring

01 Reach the Roundtable Hold via Melina's invitation
02 Speak to the Two Fingers through the fog door
03 Obtain a Great Rune from one of the Shardbearers
04 Return and activate the rune at its Divine Tower

Steps are blurred — reveal one at a time or ask Updog to walk you through it.

The Codex

A game reference that actually knows things

The Codex is Updog's built-in AI game knowledge base. When you ask about a boss, a weapon, a mechanic, or a location, Updog checks the Codex first. If the entry exists, you get an instant cached answer — fast, accurate, and already checked for quality.

If the entry doesn't exist yet, Updog generates one on the fly using web search and AI, caches it permanently, and it becomes available to everyone. Premium members are the ones who generate new entries through their own searches — which means the database grows naturally as people use it.

Free users can search and read the Codex without limits. Premium users are the ones who grow it.

Every search a premium member makes makes the Codex better for everyone. That's the whole model.

Personas

Your sidekick, your way

Updog starts with a default personality — friendly, knowledgeable, direct. But you can shape it. Personas let you define how Updog sounds, what it emphasizes, and what vibe it brings to the session.

Want a no-nonsense tactical coach who skips the flavor text? A lore enthusiast who puts every answer in story context? A supportive companion who always checks if you want spoilers before giving them? You set it up once and it sticks.

Persona Builder is coming soon — but the base configuration is already live in settings.

How it works

What's actually happening under the hood

Non-technical explanation of the moving parts — because you deserve to know what you're running on your PC.

01
🎙️

You speak

Hold your hotkey and ask your question out loud. Updog records just that clip — it's not listening continuously — and converts your voice to text using ElevenLabs' speech recognition.

02
🧠

AI thinks

Your question, your memory context, and the current game all get sent to Claude (Anthropic's AI). It checks the Codex cache first. If the answer is there, it uses it. If not, it searches the web and builds an answer.

03
📢

Updog answers

The response comes back as text, gets sent to ElevenLabs for voice synthesis, and plays through your speakers or headset. The whole round trip is a few seconds — fast enough to stay in the moment.

04
💾

Memory updates

After the conversation, a lighter AI model scans what was said and extracts anything worth remembering — goals you mentioned, facts you shared, where you're heading. This gets saved to your persistent memory for next session.

Hosted version: All of this runs through Updog's infrastructure — you don't need any API keys or accounts with AI providers. Your subscription covers everything.

BYOK version: The same flow, but using API keys you provide directly. You'll need accounts with Anthropic, ElevenLabs, and optionally others depending on which features you want. Free to download, you pay your own API usage.

Premium

Why go premium — and what you actually get

The hosted version is a subscription because running AI infrastructure isn't free. But it's also the way to get Updog without thinking about any of it — no keys, no setup, no configuration. Just install and play.

Zero setup No Anthropic account, no ElevenLabs account, no nothing. Install and go.
Full feature access Everything Updog can do, including features that require services beyond what a single API key set covers.
You grow the Codex Every search you run that generates a new Codex entry is permanent — everyone who searches it after you gets the cached result. You're building the database.
Sync across machines Your memory, personas, and settings follow you. New PC, same sidekick.
Priority on everything new New features roll to hosted users first. BYOK gets them eventually.

FAQ

Questions you'd actually ask

No fluff. Real answers to real concerns.

What games does it support?
Updog works with any PC game because its knowledge comes from AI and the web — it's not hardcoded for specific titles. The Codex has dedicated entries for popular games and grows constantly. Game detection supports the most common launchers (Steam, Epic, GOG) and the list of auto-detected games expands regularly. If your game isn't auto-detected, you can set it manually in a couple of taps.
Will this get me banned in multiplayer games?
Updog doesn't interact with game memory, inject into game processes, or modify any game files. It reads your screen (only if you turn that on), listens to your voice, and sends you answers. It's in the same category as having a wiki tab open — you're just getting the information faster. That said: check your game's terms of service. Some competitive games have strict rules about anything running alongside them. Updog doesn't do anything that anti-cheat software targets, but we won't pretend every game has the same rules.
What's the difference between free (BYOK) and premium?
The BYOK version is free to download and runs on your own API keys. You get the core features — voice, memory, game detection, quest helper, and Codex read access — but you're managing the keys and paying per-use to the AI providers directly. The hosted version is a subscription where we manage all of that. You also get Codex generation (new entries are created when you search for things that aren't cached yet), and you get new features first.
Does it record my screen all the time?
No. Screen awareness is off by default. When you turn it on, there's a clear visual indicator in the overlay so you always know it's active. When it's on, it captures screenshots on demand (or at a set interval if you enable continuous mode) and sends them to the AI for analysis. Nothing is recorded continuously, nothing is stored, and you can turn it off mid-session at any point.
What is the Codex, exactly?
The Codex is Updog's built-in game knowledge base. It's a growing database of AI-generated, cached entries about game bosses, weapons, mechanics, locations, and more. When you ask Updog something, it checks the Codex first. If the answer is there, you get it instantly. If not, it generates a new entry on the fly (premium feature), caches it, and that answer is now available to everyone who asks the same thing. It's community-built through usage — every premium search that finds a new topic makes the Codex bigger and faster for everyone. Free users can search and read the Codex without any limits.
Does it work offline?
Not currently. Updog relies on cloud AI for answers — both for voice processing and for generating responses. You need an internet connection for it to work. Some Codex entries might be cached locally in the future, but for now it requires connectivity. This is on the roadmap but not a near-term feature.
Is my data safe? What gets stored?
Your persistent memories (goals, facts, context) are stored in your account on our servers. Your conversation history within a session is not stored — it only exists in memory while the app is running. Screen captures are never stored; they're sent for analysis and discarded. We don't sell data or train AI models on your conversations. The BYOK version stores nothing on our servers — it runs locally and through your own API provider accounts.
Can I customize the voice?
Yes. The default voice is "Brian" — a natural-sounding English voice. You can swap to other ElevenLabs voices in settings. Voice cloning is on the roadmap, which would let you set any voice you want. For now, there are multiple built-in options to choose from.
Why "Updog"?
The name comes from the product's origin story: the founder kept losing track of what he was doing mid-session — setting something down, getting into a fight, and coming back with no idea what the original plan was. Updog is the answer to "what's up, dog?" — the sidekick who always knows what you were doing and picks up where you left off. The pun only makes it better.
